09 Apr 2009 12:56 Driving down my petrol bills
As a mum of two I was eager to find to how to lower my bills. We were already good at recycling and composting; we’d take our own bags to the supermarket etc. But our house leaks heat all over the place, and we didn’t practice any smarter driving techniques….
Now we’re well into the Challenge and I’ve just been taught all the smarter driving tips!
I always knew that I was a bit of a hasty driver but after an hour’s tuition learning to drive more safely and more fuel-efficiently I was amazed that there could be such a tangible improvement.
It’s all about driving more smoothly, more fluidly, which basically means anticipating everything that’s going on and looking much further ahead all the time.
Even on a 10 minute lap of Havant I went from 38.1mpg to 46.7 mpg. If I can manage to teach my husband the skills, we’ll make a huge saving on petrol.
I send in my fuel readings (along with gas and leccie) every week to the ACT ON CO2 team so I’m hoping this is an area that I can really make a saving.
